Clint Cockerell Surles – PHS 1941
05 / 29 / 1922 – 09 / 02 / 2016
Clint Cockerell Surles went to meet his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, September 2, 2016, at the age of 94. Clint was the son of A.D. and Lillie Surles. He was a graduate of Palestine High School and University of North Texas.
War interrupted his studies for a time. Mr. Surles was a Medical Tech 4th Grade in the Army’s 361st Infantry. The soldier saw duty in Africa, Anzio, the Alps, Florence, Rome, Venice, and Nice. In 7 days of fighting, 600 of the 800 soldiers were killed. In memory of the valiant war heroes,
Mr. Surles wanted to be laid to rest in the same manner his fallen brothers returned to the U.S. Clint returned to Palestine, married Martha Jeanne Laumen, had 2 children and completed a career with the railroad, oil industry, sales of vegetables, and operating the family owned Palestine Coca-Cola/Dr Pepper Bottling Company.
Clint is survived by his wife of 65 years, Martha Jeanne Surles; children, Chris and Lea Surles of Dilley and Susan and Randy Osborne of Eustace. He loved being Um-Pa to Courtney (Greg) Durbin of Ingram and Jason (Kristen) Surles of Dilley. Ty, Trace, Lynnlee, and Owen were the great-grandchildren that brought great joy. He will be greatly missed by great-nieces, family, and friends.
Graveside services were held Sunday, September 4, 2016, at 3:00 pm in the Palestine City Cemetery with Reverend Dale Norris officiating.
Arrangements were under the direction of Herrington / Land of Memory Funeral Home.
