William Edwin (Ed) Lowe of Palestine passed away on November 18, 2015. He was born in Anderson County in 1924 to Clayton and Doris (Wilson) Lowe. Ed spent most of his life in education. He began school at Lone Pine and graduated from Palestine High School. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in San Antonio and served in the 9th Division repairing planes in the European theater during the Second World War. With the benefits of the GI Bill he enrolled in Abilene Christian College where he fell in love with Joan Reynolds.
He graduated from ACC in 1950 with a degree in Education. That summer he married Joan. She passed away in 2014 having celebrated 63 years of marriage. The couple first lived in East Texas. In the fall of 1951 he accepted a position teaching high school History in El Campo, Texas. They did not intend to stay in El Campo but it became home and Ed remained with the School District until his retirement in 1989. During that span he got his Master’s Degree from Sam Houston State and became a high school counselor. He worked several additional jobs (school bus driver, electrician and others) so that his wife could stay at home as a full time mother even though she also had a teaching degree. In addition to his school work he served the El Campo church of Christ as a song leader, bible class teacher, deacon and elder. He also conducted bible studies by mail with international students and served a short term in Bulgaria teaching students to read English. After his retirement he also volunteered with a local hospice organization. In 2003 Ed and Joan returned to Palestine where they found a loving family in the Frankston church of Christ.
He is survived by their 5 children: Gary (Sandy) Lowe of Abilene, Cindy (Mike) Stewart of Palestine, Phyllis (Jim) Beck of Lubbock, David Lowe of Melbourne, Florida and Lisa (Jay) Mayes of Abilene. All 5 children attended Abilene Christian.
