A memorial service is being planned for a later date for George Paul Shannon, 76, of Bradford.
He passed away Thursday, July 24, 2014 at his home in Bradford. George was born Oct. 3, 1937 in Palestine, Texas to G. Raymond and Dannie Kerley Shannon. He married Peggy Jane Herrington on July 11, 1958 in Palestine, Texas.
George was a veteran of the Texas National Guard and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was discharged as a CPL in October 1958. He lived in this area all of his life and was a lifetime member of the NRA and North American Hunting Club. George was the owner/operator of Shannon’s Welding Service in Athens for 40 years. After retirement he began his cattle operation and was an avid hunter with both bow and guns. His hobbie was designing and making knives. He was a loving husband, father, and a mentor to his two sons and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
George is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Peggy Shannon; sons and daughter-in-law. Raymond Martin Shannon and wife LaVerna of Oceanside, Calif., and Troy Raytin Shannon of Bradford; three grandchildren, Katrina Marie Shannon, Tyler Elvis Shannon and William Martin Shannon.
