Gary LaVaughn Hughes went home to be with our Lord on Thursday May 23, 2013 at 6:30 A.M. after a long 10 year battle with renal cancer. “I have fought a good fight, I have won my race, I have kept the faith. II Timothy 4:7.
Gary was born in Crockett, TX. October 13, 1948 to the late Edward L. and Ruby L. Hughes, but lived most of his life in Palestine, where he graduated from Palestine High School, Class of 1967. It is where he met the love of his life, Louise J. Hughes, and married her on October 18, 1968 and she has been by his side ever since. At an early age Gary worked for Eilenbergers Bakery alongside his father and uncles.
After high school he went to Fort Bliss, El Paso for his basic training, then served his two year tour in the Army at Ft. Bragg, NC. While there he received his business degree. He was a certified locksmith for 20 years and worked for the U.S. Postal Service until he retired in 2004 after 32 years of service. He was involved in Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, CB Radio Club, APWY, American Legion, and the Westwood Band Boosters Club. He was a member of the Grace and Truth Church where he was also a Deacon.
Gary is survived by his wife Louise J. Hughes of Palestine, two children, Gary W. Hughes and wife Tempie of Frisco, TX., LaVonda Spencer and her husband Steven of Palestine, granddaughter Mary Tyinski. He is also survived by aunts, uncles, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law, which were like brothers and sisters.
A memorial service will be held to remember Gary and the life he lived, the courage he had and the strength he shared, on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at Grace and Truth Church, 924 N. Esplanade, Palestine.
