Services for Alvin B. Calcote Jr., 89, of Palestine, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 6, 2012 at Lone Pine Baptist Church with Dr. Ron Sloan and the Rev. John Green officiating. Burial will follow at Land of Memory Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements are under the direction of Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.
Mr. Calcote died Sunday, September 2, 2012 at Trucare Living Center. Mr. Calcote was born September 26, 1922 to Alvin B. Sr. and Mattie Eubanks Calcote in Tennessee Colony. He graduated from Palestine High School in 1940. On October 3, 1942, he married Mildred Humphrey. Later the same month, he enlisted in the Army / Air corps and served his country during World War II. A.B. was Honorably Dischared on February 23, 1946.
Afterwards, he and Mildred returned to Palestine and he went to work for the Texas Highway Department and retired in 1984 as a crew chief in the engineering department after 38 years of service. A.B. also served as a deacon for 53 years at Lone Pine Baptist Church and served as church treasurer for many years and on other various committees.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 68 years, Mildred Humphrey Calcote; sisters, Gwendolyn Calcote and Martha Lynn Sherridan.
He is survived by children, Don Calcote and Betty Conaway and husband Milton; granddaughter, Julie Lively and husband Jay; great-grandson, Brenden Lively, all of Palestine; brother, Howard Calcote and wife Althea; brothers-in-law, Jerry Sherridan of Port Arthur and Robert Humphrey and wife Verna Ray of Palestine; many nieces and nephews. He leaves behind a host of friends at Trucare Living Center and at Dogwood Trails Assisted Living.
Pallbearers will be Dickie Douglas, David Scoggins, Gary Calcote, Mike Calcote, Mike Newburn and Johnny Russell.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jay Lively, Proctor Moore, Jerry Sherridan, Mike Lindstrom, Toby Barnett, Robert Humphrey, Kenneth Calcote, Oscar Warren, Don Mays, Raymond Rogers and Cam Davis.
Condolence calls will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Herrington/Land of Memory.
