Services for Mary Grace Cheatham Tyson, 88 of Fort Stockton, formerly of Palestine, will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Bailey & Foster Chapel with Rev. Robley Soileau officiating. Burial will follow in Palestine City Cemetery under the directly of Bailey & Foster.
Mrs. Tyson died Saturday at the Ft. Stockton Nursing Center. She was born September 10, 1912, in Palestine to Henry and Clara Nash Cheatham. Mrs. Tyson graduated from Palestine High School in 1929. She attended Nixon Business School in Palestine and studied at Texas Christian University before transferring to Texas Women’s University where she graduated with honors in 1933. She taught for more than 30 years in the Ft. Stockton Schools until retirement in 1978. She was president of both the Classroom Teachers Association and Texas State Teachers Association. She was president of Mizpah Guild of the First Methodist Church and sang in the church choir. In 1950 she helped conduct the federal census for Pecos County.
She was preceded in death by brother, Jimmy Cheatham.
Mrs. Tyson is survived by her husband, Howard Tyson of Austin; daughter, Betsy Tyson of Austin; sisters, Electa Morris of League City and Ruby Nell Sheridan of San Angelo.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Cheatham and Ken Leggett.
Condolence calls will be Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
