Services for Maurine McMahan, 83, of Palestine will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Juan Trevino officiating. Burial will be at Palestine City Cemetery under the direction of Bailey & Foster Funeral Home.
Miss McMahan died Friday at Anderson County Memorial Hospital. She was born January 31, 1905 in Palaestine, daughter of Harry M. and Ethel Numsen McMahan. She graduated from Palestine High School in 1923 and attended Texas Womans University, majoring in art. She taught in the Port Arthur public schools.
Miss McMahan received the Woman of the Year award in 1954 and was active in many civic and church activities. She was secretary of the civic music organization for many years and was a member of the William Finley Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; the Pioneer Garden Club; Guion Music Club, Art League; and the Harvey Woman’s Club. She was secretary-treasurer of the Presbyterian Sunday School for more than 20 years, a member of the choir and a former president of the Women of the Church.
Survivors include brother, H.M. McMahan of Tyler; sister, Mrs. Werner K. Kuhne of Palestine and nephews Robert McMahan and Joe McMahan both of Houston.
Pallbearers will be A.D. Surles, Clint Surles, Robert Jordan, Bob Harrell, Bill Knowles, Robert McMahan and Joe McMahan.
Condolence calls will be received at the funeral home from 4 – 6 p.m. today. The body will be at the funeral home until taken to the church for services.
