Services for J. C. “Jake” Carnathan, Jr. 78 of Tyler will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church in Palestine with Robert Tolsen and Tom Rousseau officiating. Burial will follow in Palestine City Cemetery under the direction of Herrington / Land of Memory Funeral Home.
Mr. Carnathan died Saturday in Tyler. He was born in Palestine on April 8, 1921 to J.C. and Minnie Dee Kadenhead Carnathan. Mr. Carnathan graduated from Palestine High School and worked in the accounting and personnel departments of the Missouri Pacific Railroad prior to and after World War II., He served as a naval gunner in the South Pacific from 1942 until 1945. He also had been a property tax consultant with Pritchard and Abbott, James Hall and Associates and Consolided Tax Services of Henderson.
He was an active member of the Jaycees in Palestine until 1956 and an active member of the East Texas Heart Beats in Tyler since 1985. He was a member of Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler, He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cyndee Carnathan, in 1946; sisters, Dorothy Huffman and Mozelle Campbell; and brothers, Frank Carnathan and Paul Carnathan.
Mr. Carnathan is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Carnathan of Tyler; and brothers, H.B. Carnathan and Spence Carnathan, both of Palestine.
Pallbearers will be Bill Cockran, Billy Bob Parker, Bob Morgan, M.Z. Sammons, Lee Sammons, Stoney Rower, Charlie Mancuso and Cody Douglas.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Steve Keuer, Dr. Ron Freeman, Dr. Gary Kimmel and their staffs and the staff of the Wellness Center.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
