Services for J. D. Cox, 82, of Palestine, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Herrington / Land of Memory Chapel with Rev. V.A. “Jack” Cox officiating.  Burial will follow at Roselawn Park under the direction of Herrington / Land of Memory Funeral home.

Mr. Cox died Tuesday in a Tyler nursing home.  He was born December 12, 1918 in Nashville, Arkansas to Benton Callaway and Bessie Mae Rodgers Cox.  Mr. Cox had lived in Palestine most of his life.  He was a 1936 graduate of Palestine High School and a graduate of the University of Houston.  He was a member of First United Methodist Church.  He was owner and operator of Cox Electric Company for 46 years.  He also worked for MoPac Railroad.  He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3907.  He served on a destroyer escort with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

He was preceded in death by wife, Mary R. Cox in May, 19989 and brothers, Clifton Cox and B.C. Cox, Jr.

Mr. Cox is survived by son Jim Cox of Houston; daughter, Jane Mathews of Palestine; sister, Helen Williams of Palestine; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Ken Bishop, Ken Leggett, Gary Thomas, Mark Henderson, Max Davis and John Conner.  Honorary pallbearers will be nephews and great-nephews.

Visittion will be 6 p.m. t0 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
