George Petrovich 1943

George Petrovich passed away on March 31. He was born in Palestine, TX, on March 22, 1926, and graduated from Palestine High School, where he was named the Best All-Around student and captain of the football team. He then entered the University of Texas, where he graduated with a BA in zoology. At UT he combined academics with athletics and was awarded 5 varsity letters in football and track. He was a two time All Conference tackle, as well as winning the SWC shot put championship. After playing in the starting lineup in the College All-Star game in 1949, George went on to play professionally for 2 years with the Chicago Cardinals.
Then, he entered UT Dental School and, after graduation, enjoyed 39 years of dental practice. He was a life member of the American and Texas Dental Associations. George was an avid golfer and enjoyed working on his farm in Palestine, as well as traveling the world with his wife, family and friends. He was a member of St. Pius X Church.
His parents George and Matilda Petrovich, and sisters Anne, Florence, and Olivia, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dr. Margery Petrovich, his brother, Charles Petrovich, his sister-in-law Betty and Dr. Trygve Opsahl, and numerous nieces and nephews. Margery wishes to express her appreciation to Evarine Taylor, Margaret King, and Rory Butler for the loving care they gave him during his long illness.
Visitation will be at Bailey & Foster Funeral Home, Palestine on Monday, April 5, from 11:00 to 12:30 and following that, the funeral mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Palestine at 2:00 P.M. with Msgr. Zack officiating. He was a U.S. Army veteran and there will be a military burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
