Services for Alfred H. Summers, 70, of Palestine will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in First United Methodist Church with Rev. Bert Bagley, Dr. Weldon Morton and Bob Gilliam officiating. Burial will be in New Addition Cemetery under the direction of Bailey & Foster Funeral Home. Mr. Summers died Saturday morning in Trinity Valley Medical Center. He was born on February 2, 1921 in Nacogdoches son of Elbert Joseph and Bessie Bailey Summers.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Anderson County Bar Association and the Texas State Bar Association. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and served in the United States Marine Corp as a second lieutenant during World War II.
He also was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3907 and Johnny Cantrell Post of Disabled American Veterans. He was a life member of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity International, and was a Silver Beaver in the Boy Scouts of American. He was editor of the Law Review of the University of Texas at Austin.
He is survived by his wife, Estill Lackey Summers of Palestine; sons, Robert S. Gilliam, Jr. of Aurora, CO, Charles F. “Rick” Gilliam of Lubbock and Richard Lee Gilliam Sr. of Palestine; brother, F. Bailey Summers of Palestine; and six grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Willie Carwell, Jr., Robert Simpson, Joe T. Harris, Jack Conboy, R. Wayne Lawrence, R.W. Calloway and Thomas H. Hight.
The family will receive condolence calls at the funeral home from 4 – 6 p.m. today.
