Services for Johnnie George, 65, of Lake Palestine, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday as First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David V. Pittenger officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Park Cemetery under the direction of Bailey & Foster Funeral Home. Military honors will be accorded by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3907.
Mr. George died Saturday at his home. He was born September 16, 1925 in Palestine, a son of Janie Kojak George and William George. He was a 1943 graduate of Palestine High School and served in the Army during World War II from July 26, 1944 to October 24, 1945. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the Purple Heart for wounds received in Luzon during the Philippine Liberation. He also served on Leyte.
Mr. George was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Palestine VFW 3907. He was a partner in William George Produce Co., which his father founded in 1936. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia George Smith in 1979.
He is survived by his wife, Cherri George of Lake Palestine; mother, Mrs. William George Sr., of Palestine; daughter, Mika Via of North Little Rock, Arkansas; Benjamin Stevens Dyer and Jonathan Graham George, both of Lake Palestine; and brothers, William George Jr., Jessie George and Frank George of Lufkin.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
