Jesse Link “J.L.” Parkman 1941

Jesse Link Parkman passed away in Palestine, Texas on Oct .26, 2010. He was born Oct. 12, 1923, in Tennessee Colony to Jesse Lee Parkman and Martha Clyde Marlow Parkman. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Crockett Road Church of Christ with Dan Manuel officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Cemetery conducted by Michael and Bob Parkman. Arrangements are under the direction of Herrington / Land of Memory Funeral Home.

Mr. Parkman graduated from Palestine High School, Nixon Business College and attended Abilene Christian University, Tyler Junior College, Trinity Valley College, and Army Business College in Los Angeles, CA.

He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1982 as Palestine Postmaster. He was involved in real estate and appraisal, Texas Dept. of Criminal Justice, Postal Service Instructor at Southern Center P.S.T. & D.I. in Memphis, Tenn., Postal Service Training & Development Institute in Memphis, Tenn.,chairman of Selective Service Board in Palestine, member of Associated Charities, Budget Committee Chairman of United Way, Meals on Wheels, Rotary Club, president of Westwood I.S.D. Board of Trustees, president of National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Red Cross, Appraisal Review Board and chairman of Dogwood Trails Home Show.

He entered the military in 1942 serving in England, France, and Germany and was awarded the EAME Campaign Medal with six Bronze Stars, Distinguished Unit Badge with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, WWII Medal, and Rifleman Medal.

He was a Christian and member of the Crockett Road Church of Christ serving as church treasurer, song director and Bible school teacher.

Mr. Parkman was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Charles, Kenneth, Bill, and John Parkman; sisters, Blanche Kinney, Lucille Scholand. Survivors include his wife, Ida Lee Goodson Parkman of Palestine; daughters, Sheila Link of Palestine and Jimmye Brown of Denver, Colo.

Pallbearers will be Dale Sparks, Doug Lowe, Andrew Link, Jim Hahn, David Sparks, and Henry Baker.  Honorary pallbearers will be Lloyd Wilkinson, Edwin Lowe, Glenn Lowe, Ken Brewer, Carroll Holmes, Frank Via, James Moseley, Bill Hearne, and Patrick Parkman.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Herrington / Land of Memory Funeral Home.
