Services for Verna Rae Freeman Herrington, 71, of Palestine, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Herrington Land of Memory Chapel with the Rev. Robert E. Webb officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Park.
Mrs. Herrington died Thursday evening at Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. She was born September 11, 1923 in the Elwood community to Ruel Grover and Ethel Elrod Freeman. Bot of her parents were descendants of early pioneering families who helped settle this area in the 1860’s.
Mrs. Herrington attended Elmwood primary schools and graduated from Palestine High School in 1940 and Nixon Business College about 1950. She was secretary of the General Chairman of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen for about 10 years during the 1950’s. She retired from J.F. Fontaine & Associates in 1985 at the age of 62 after an 18-year association as secretary/bookkeeper for Jerry Fontaine and Rayburn Moore.
Mrs. Herrington was a member of Grace United Methodist church for more than 50 years. She married Raymond Louis Herrington on December 18, 1940, and they were married 54 years. She was preceded in death by her sister, Doris Freeman Hanner, in 1978.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond Louis Herrington of Palestine; mother, Ethel Elrod Freeman of Palestine; daughter, Sharon Louise Herrington of Palestine; and brother, Ruel G. Freeman of Palestine.
Pallbearers will be Rayburn Moore, Clarence Bice, Don Denson, Robert Broyles, Jerry Palmer and Adolph Shaver.
Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association.
Condolence calls will be received from 6 – 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
