Graveside services for Hunter Steel, 88, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Tennessee Colony Cemetery in Tennessee Colony with Dr. Ron Sloan officiating.
Mr. Steel died Wednesday in Palestine.
He was born July 27, 1922 to Graham Algernon (Algie) Steel and Vera Kate Steel in Palestine, and grew up in Tennessee Colony.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his beloved sister, Wanda Campbell, all of Palestine.
Over a span of 30 years Mr. Steel taught eighth-grade history, math, and government in the Palestine Independent School District, touching many lives. He coached youth YMCA baseball and softball and for a few years taught a Sunday School class at First Baptist Church in Palestine. His college education at Texas A&M was interrupted by the start of World War II, where he served in the Army Air Corps, he later received a bachelor and masters degree from Stephen F. Austin State University and did post-graduate work at the University of California at Bakersfield.
His family was Mr. Steel’s joy.
Mr. Steel is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nellie Joy, of Palestine; children, Donna Cook and husband John of Nacogdoches, Claudia Lasiter and husband Larry of Lufkin, Charles Steel and wife Janice of Wintersville, Ohio, David Steel and wife Kay of Palestine, John Steel and wife Kathy of Fort Worth; and two stepchildren, Richard Lindsey of Palestine and Teresa Lindsey Davis of Longview; 14 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Condolence calls will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home in Palestine.
