William “Bill” Eastland Sloan, 79, of Dallas, Texas, passed away Jan. 17, 2011.A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 5, 2011 at VFW Post 6796 located at 9179 Garland Rd. in Dallas.Bill was born April 3, 1931, in Palestine, Texas to James M. “Sony” and Mary Eastland Sloan.He graduated from Palestine High School in 1950. He joined the Navy upon graduation and served in the submarine service for four years on a Guppie style snorkel sub.

He was employed by Minneapolis Honeywell Co. in Houston, Johnson Controls and Yokagawa Corp. in Dallas, Texas. He was a trouble shooter for the company and worked in numerous locations around the country. After his retirement, he volunteered with the VFW for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Juanita Hickman Sloan; son, Thomas Edward Sloan; and brother, James Carey Sloan.

He is survived by his son, James Matthew Sloan of Gainesville, Texas and wife, Helen LaFata Sloan, of Tennessee; stepson, Gay Hickman and wife, Kay of Snyder; stepdaughter, Jane Myers of Dallas, Texas; sisters, Romaine Sloan Griffin and husband, Dale, of Modesto, Calif; and Catherine Sloan Sammons and husband, J.C., of Hewitt, Texas; brother, Thomas Matt Sloan and wife, Sharon, of El Paso, Texas; sister-in-law, Verna Pettiette Sloan of Holly Lake Ranch, Texas; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the VFW Post 6796 or to the charity of  your choice.
