Funeral services for Joe Douglas Smith, 77, of Terrell, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cheatham Memorial United Methodist Church in Edgewood with burial to follow at Chambers Day Cemetery in Palestine under direction of Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home in Edgewood.
Joe passed away October 21, 2007, in Dallas. Joe Douglas Smith was born August 5, 1930, in Troup, son of the late John Douglas and Thelma Thompson Smith.
He graduated from Palestine High School and then served his country in Korea in the U.S. Army. Joe married Peggy Campbell July 9, 1954, at Grace Temple Baptist Church in Oak Cliff. They made their home in Dallas, and raised their three children, Debbie, James and Stanley. Joe started working for Proctor and Gamble in 1949, and retired after 42 years of service. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, bowling and was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan. He was a member of Cheatham Memorial United Methodist Church and the Terry Hale Class in Edgewood.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, as well as sisters, Linda Kay Myers, Lillian McKay, and Fay Whitaker.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Smith of Terrell; daughter, Debbie Wacha and husband, Steve of Palestine; sons, James Smith of Little Rock, AR, and Stanley Smith and wife, Deanne of Canton; sister, Mary Helen Canady of Palestine; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild and two on the way.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home in Edgewood.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cheatham Memorial United Methodist Church in Edgewood.
