Memorial service for G. Ray “Smitty” Smith, Jr., 49, of Palestine, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Church in Palestine with the Rev. Benny Burlison officiating. Private burial was Tuesday at Land of Memory Cemetery under the direction of Herrington/Land of Memory.

Mr. Smith died Tuesday at a Wortham nursing home after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Los Angeles, California on November 7, 1944, to G. Ray and Dorothy Jane Jenkins Smith. He was a 1963 graduate of Palestine High School and attended Tyler Junior College and Henderson County Junior College. Mr. Smith received his master’s degrees in biology and geology from East Texas State University in Commerce. He returned to Palestine in 1983.

He was a member of Palestine Chamber of Commerce, Palestine Masonic Lodge # 31 and Trinity Church.

Mr. Smith is survived by his parents, of Palestine; son, George Ray Smith of Crandall; and a daughter, Catherine Smith of Crandall.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Anne Smith, in 1961; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Jenkins; and a cousin, Chuck Harper.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Church Building Fund or the Anderson County Humane Society.
