Funeral services for Harry C. Herrington, 69, of Palestine will be at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at the First Christian Church with Jack DuPree and Rev. Charles Kincaid officiating. Burial will follow at Land of Memory Cemetery under the direction of Herrington / Land of Memory.
Mr. Herrington died Saturday morning at his home after a brief illness.
He was born February 18, 1921 in Anderson County the son of George Carlton and Mary Sammons Herrington. He graduated from Palestine High School in 1938 and Texas A&M University in 1942 with a degree in electrical engineering. While at Texas A&M he was selected as a member of the Ross Volunteer Company and was a Regimental Commander in the Corps of Cadets. On graduation day he entered service in World War II as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps.
Mr. Herrington managed the Rowley United Theaters in Palestine after the war and later owned and operated the B&B Sporting Goods Store and Palestine Ready Mix Concrete Plant. In 1983 he purchased Land of Memory Cemetery and opened Herrington Funeral Home with his family. He worked there until the time of his death.
He was a member of the First Christian Church and was a former member of the Palestine Rotary Club. He served as a Trustee of the Palestine Independent School District and a member of the Board of the Palestine YMCA, the Cartmell Home, and the Anderson County Appraisal District.
He was preceded in death by his wife Bea Jones Herrington in 1984 and a son John Mark in 1986.
Survivors include 2 sons, Lieutenant Colonel David E. Herrington of Brussels, Belgium, Paul Herrington of Palestine, 1 daughter, Martha Conner of Palestine, 1 sister, Orline H. DuPree of Palestine, and 7 grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Theodore S. Maffitt, Jr., Dale Smith, Dr. Don Carroll, Paul Elliott, Jim Crook, Lloyd Davis, Richard DuPree Wayne Smith and Judge Tate McCain.
Condolences will be from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Funeral Home.
