Guy Morris Broughton 1938

Captain Guy Morris Broughton was stationed in Bermuda flying a B29 Hurricane Hunter plane when all planes were ordered to the U.S. to avoid an approaching hurricane. On September 18, 1953, during the return flight to Bermuda, one engine of Mr. Broughton’s plane caught fire. The plane crashed and of the sixteen persons on board, Guy and six others, were lost at sea; nine were rescued.
Mr. Broughton was born in Palestine, August 11, 1919, a son of Oscar O. and Maybell Wilkey Broughton.
Guy graduated from Palestine High School in 1938; enlisted in the Army Air Corps and got his wings as a pilot. During WWII he trained pilots as well as performing other duties. Mr. Broughton flew 25 missions in the Korean War.
In 1945, Guy married Betty Wallace of Tampa, Florida.
Mr. Broughton was preceded in death by his wife.
He is survived by a son, Steve Broughton; his parents, Oscar and Maybell Broughton; brothers, Oscar Broughton Jr. and Ted broughton; and sisters, Rubye Trigg and Helen Wilkinson.
A memorial service was later held at the First Presbyterian Church in Palestine.
