Edwin Hughes Read was born October 12, 1912 in Frisco, and died February 23, 1945. He was the son of Osceola and Florence Fain Read.

Chief Pharmacists Mate Edwin Hughs Read, U. S. Navy was killed when the American Air Liner “Mercury” crashed in the mountains near Rural Retreat, Virginia, the morning of February 23, 1945. At the time of his death, Edwin was on his way home on leave from the destroyer “Frank Knox”.

While serving in the Navy, Edwin was awarded the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Medal with designation for actual combat duty, the European-Eastern Africa Theatre Medal with Battle Stars and the North American Theater Medal. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Fleet Reserve Association.

Edwin’s name is inscribed on a Memorial Monument in front of the Court House in Palestine.

He married Avalona Scarbough August 8, 1942 in Palestine.

He is survived by his parents and wife, and siblings William Thomas Read, Ray Weldon Read, Ruth Fain Read Meisner and Ada Helen Read Gentry.
